Build a Workbench
Plan the size, frame, work surface, storage and mobility before buying lumber, fasteners and shop hardware.
Safety first: Wear appropriate eye and hearing protection, secure workpieces before cutting or drilling, and follow the instructions for every saw, drill, jig and fastener you use. Make sure the finished bench is stable before loading or working on it.
Materials & hardware
- Dimensional lumber for legs, rails and supports
- Plywood, laminated panel or other suitable worktop
- Wood or construction screws sized for the selected lumber
- Wood glue if the chosen joinery calls for it
- Optional lower shelf material
- Optional locking workbench casters
Tools to consider
- Tape measure, pencil and carpenter's square
- Circular saw or miter saw appropriate for the cuts
- Drill/driver and bits
- Clamps
- Level
- Pocket-hole jig if using pocket-hole joinery
Plan before you buy
- Measure the available floor space and decide the finished width, depth and working height.
- Choose a worktop based on the jobs you expect to do and the weight the bench needs to support.
- Sketch the frame, leg positions, cross supports and any lower shelf so you can calculate lumber before shopping.
- Choose a joinery method and match the screws or other fasteners to the material thickness and connection.
- Decide whether the bench will stay fixed or use locking casters, and account for caster height in the final working height.

- Clamp opening, reach and clamping force for the pieces you will assemble
- Screw type, length, coating and suitability for the lumber and joinery
- Caster load rating, wheel size, mounting pattern and locking mechanism
- Workbench dimensions against doorways, vehicles, storage and tool clearance in the shop
