How to Replace a Shower Head

Before you start

Read the instructions included with your new shower head first. Many models install by hand and some manufacturers do not call for thread-seal tape, so follow the fixture instructions rather than automatically adding tape.

Protect finished surfaces if you use a wrench, and stop if the shower arm itself is loose, badly corroded, cracked, or leaking inside the wall. Those conditions may require a plumber.

Project checklist

1. Remove the old shower head. Try turning it counterclockwise by hand first. Use an adjustable wrench only when necessary, taking care not to damage the shower arm or finish.
2. Clean and inspect the threads. Remove old tape or residue and check the exposed shower-arm threads for damage or corrosion.
3. Prepare the connection. If the new shower head's instructions call for thread-seal tape, wrap it neatly in the direction that will not unwind as the fitting is tightened.
4. Install the new shower head. Thread it on carefully to avoid cross-threading. Hand-tighten as directed by the manufacturer; use tools only if the instructions require them.
5. Test for leaks. Turn on the shower and inspect the connection. If water appears at the threads, shut the water off and correct the connection rather than simply overtightening it.
